Bookbinding courses

Single Section Binding. Thursday 20th October 2011
The basis of all bookbinding techniques, this course teaches the handling of papers, adhesives and book cloth. The finished book has a hard cover and is covered with book cloth and decorated paper.

Sewn Boards Binding  Thursday 24th November 2011
This is a binding invented by Gary Frost, a conservator in The United States, as a way of rebinding small books with the minimum amount of adhesives. It introduces the technique of sewing books with multiple sections, it has stiff covers and opens completely flat.
It is useful for the rebinding of small books and the making of new ones with scope for decoration of the covers.

Long Stitch Binding  Thursday 12th January 2012
This is a medieval binding which uses no adhesives and again opens completely flat. The stitches are exposed on the spine and there are a number of possibilities for  decoration both with the sewing and the covers.
A very versatile binding which uses any material that can be stiffened. We will be using leather on this course.

Cross Structure Binding  Thursday 9th February 2012
Like the long stitch binding this uses any stiff material for the covers and has a lot of possibilities for decoration and adaptation. Another conservation binding, it uses virtually no adhesive and opens completely flat.

Flat backed Case Binding   Thursday 9th March 2012
A more traditional binding, this book has hard covers which are made separately from the contents. It has multiple sections and is sewn on tapes.

All of these courses run from 10 - 4pm and the cost of £45 includes all materials.
The maximum number on any day is six.
